The Long Dark Hole of Laziness: Improve Work Productivity

Why is it hard to recover from a long stretch of laziness? Have you ever come back to work from a vacation and had a hard time getting back into the swing of things? Take a look at my thoughts and example of this and see if you agree.

At one point in my life I did not have very much work to do. I was employed but things were slow, and thus I didn’t have much on my plate at that point. To fill up the time, I browsed the web and did some reading.

Instead of keeping on top of the little responsibilities that I had during this time, everything seemed to get lost in the “meaningless amount of time” that consumed my day. This is a hole you do not want to get into.

I’m not a scientist, and I’m not the ripest strawberry on the farm. But from my observations, we humans are animals of habit. If we train our minds to be lazy, it will follow that path. However, if we are consistently responsible and go out of our way in making sure our weaknesses don’t cause us to fail, our minds will act accordingly.

So continuing with the story…I had two meetings I was supposed to attend that were none work related. I ended up totally forgetting about both of them, to where they called me about 30 minutes into the meeting that I missed. Now understand, I am the type of person who doesn’t miss meetings. If I can help it, I like to be early. This was a wake up call for me.

Learn to train your mind in where you want to go. If you want to be a responsible person, this is something you have to practice and keep practicing….even on vacation. If you want to come back from a break and recoup faster, you should keep a similar sleep schedule and stimulate your mind throughout your time off.

Do you agree with this? If you think I’m full of butterscotch filling, please let me know in the comments!
