Blogging is Like Sex – Anyone can do it…but few Master It

It seems everyone is blogging these days. In fact, the word “blog” has a different meaning depending on who you ask. It is just as easy to create a blog as it is to have sex (at least in “completing the transaction”). But having the ability doesn’t immediately make you into a master. Becoming a master takes effort, dedication and experience.

People blog for different reasons. But ultimately what ends up being successful is what is unique from the hordes of other blogs on the internet. That is why I love what Google does. They are aware of the massive amount of blogs that are out there, and they distinguish what is valuable content and what is not valuable. Just because you put up a post on motorcycles, doesn’t mean you will show up in the search for “motorcycle”. It is a hard reality, but it also is a good one because it means that anyone can succeed if they can create something unique and put in the required effort.

Are you going to get into the game of blogging, only to pull out because you aren’t making money in the first few weeks?

The question you need to ask yourself is how dedicated are you to being different and how much work are you willing to put in to make your blog stand out?

Blogging is a lot Like Sex
Here is a photo of some cats getting it on. I don’t think they are actually having sex, but it is a funny photo.

As Seth Godin phrases it, “Be what losers call a loser.“.

What are you doing differently on your blog to stand out?

  2. Chris,
Interesting analogy. I had not thought of comparing sex to blogging. I suppose your right. If your doing a great job they’ll keep coming back for more.

I have a friend who wrote a book comparing dating to sales. She spoke of the one night stand. Do you want the one shot deal or do you want to build a long term relationship.

I think its all relative. It all boils down to being unique, consistent, interesting, and valuable.

    Thanks

    • Comparing blogging and sex is not something that I have seen done before, and I thought it was kind of humorous. 🙂

Being unique and interesting makes sense. But it is not something you can create a formula to obtain, which is what most people find difficult. They want to know the exact steps they should take, when in essence they should just be themselves.

      Thanks for the valuable feedback!

  3. Chris,
I agree completely, to the extent that I realize how sub-par of a blogger I am, but I’m doing my best to embed personality within my blog posts and hopefully let people identify with my posts more.

Anything that is easy to do is extremely difficult to be good at. That applies to blogging and also to things you wouldn’t think about like sand castles.

Blogs, just like product, need to be differentiated. Just like in a competitive market, if you don’t have anything that sets you apart from your competition, you shouldn’t expect to stay in business very long.

    • Thanks for the input, Joseph. I agree with all of your points.

Sometimes we can follow the main road, but we are all unique individuals. It is my theory that if we stick to it for long enough, it should catch on at some point…just as long as the content has value. It has been my experience that people give up too easily when they don’t get quick results.

  5. I came across this on seededbuzz on facebook – since I write a Christian marriage and sex blog I typed in ‘sex’ and this is what came up! No pun intended. 🙂 I am just getting started in the blogging world and not certain I have what it takes to make it, but I will be back to see what I can glean from your wisdom. Hopefully I’ll still be around in 10 years! Thanks. Oh — LOVE the pic
